An old African American common proverb goes: "What you don' hab in yo' haid, yuh got ter' hab in yo' feet" (What you have in your head, you've got to have in your feet). This proverb and sentiments like it were often used to impress upon Africans the need to be aligned mind and body to perform an exodus from the slave plantations. Run, Mona, Run is a “signal song” like “Go Down, Moses”, alerting the enslaved Africans that the plan to escape slavery was drawing near, or that it was actually time to retreat.
